there is only the comparison of one state with another.

Ten years ago today, "The West Wing" premiered.

Janel Maloney: During my first scene, Leo comes in and asks for Josh, so I turn around and scream ''Josh!'' without getting up from my chair. Leo replies, ''I could have done that, Donna.'' We did a couple of takes, and afterwards John said, ''You're going to be here until the curtain comes down.'' He was the first person to say that.

Has anyone else read Forever Peace by Joe Haldeman? I'm a little less than halfway through it right now, and at the moment I love it just as much (if not a little more) than its predecessor-but-not-prequel, The Forever War. [Both won Hugos for Best Novel: War in 1976, Peace in 1998.] I highly recommend The Forever War to anyone who enjoys military, sci-fi, or military sci-fi books. Or books that make you really think. It's really quite something. If the rest of Forever Peace is as good as what I've read, I will heartily recommend it as well.

It's a really fantastic, serious book and - just like when I read Chris Moore's A Dirty Job and saw Nathan Fillion as Charlie Asher - I find myself picturing the main character, Julian Class, looking like Dule Hill. Thinking about Dule-as-Julian just makes me want to watch episodes of The West Wing like "Proportional Response" and "Bad Moon Rising," when Dule was at his oh-so-serious best.

Back to reading.

ETA: OMG Talk about a blast from the past. I remember cutting that out of my mom's People magazine and tacking it up on my bulletin board. It's from the 14 May 2001 issue, so I was 13. :)

Two things tonight:

Thing the First:
Photobucket
To be honest, the thing I'm the most upset about missing at this year's Comic-Con is all the Middlegoodies. The live reading of the 13th episode by the cast. The early release of the DVD set. And (as is illustrated by the image above, courtesy of the new Middleblog and drawn by the awesome Les McClaine) the release of The Doomsday Armageddon Apocalypse comic book. I really, really need to get a copy of this.

Thing the Second: I'm thinking of bringing my The West Wing Official Companion Book to Screaming Tiki so Eddie could sign either the page for "The Short List" or "Celestial Navigation." I'm thinking about it. Good idea? Bad idea? Completely ambivalent idea?

i'ma get my buffy on

02. Picspams! Laura Roslin vs. Jed Bartlet / Chris Pine / The cast of Star Trek / I'M ON A SHIP

03. Icons! HIMYM/Chris Pine/Glee and Chuck

04. I finished Odd Hours today. I didn't enjoy it as much as the first three Odd books, but it was still Odd so I did enjoy it. The end didn't really feel like an end though; c'mon Koontz, you gotta give us more Odd! I'm about to start Storm Front by Jim Butcher. It's the first Dresden Files book; Jack got it for me for graduation. He's been trying to get me to read this series for a long while.

05. 66 days until The Middleman DVDs come out.

06. Aaaaand to make this an even number, check out this gorgeous picture of Neil Gaiman and his dog, Cabal.

The rules are that for 8 days until graduation, you have to post something that made you happy that day.

Today's Happy Things: Hmmm. Let's see. I watched TWW's "We Killed Yamamoto" and "Posse Comitatus" this morning (CJ/Simon ♥). Also, I'm officially done with classes. I still have exams and papers of course, but I'm completely done with classes as a college student.

i happen to like nice men

Before I go to sleep (7am mass tomorrow!) check out this CJ/Simon picspam and this Han/Leia picspam and this Booth/Brennan picspam and this completely awesome Firefly shirt.

Alrighty. G'night.

I happened upon this picspam - Top Ten Recurring Characters on The West Wing by [info]cnnjunky - and while I vehemently disagree with most of the list, it got me thinking. So here's my non-picspam* Top 5 West Wing Recurring Characters:
01. Danny Concannon ♥
02. Ainsley Hayes
03. Joey Lucas
04. Special Agent Sunshine Simon Donovan**
05. Joe Quincy

Why did I make this post? I have no idea. 'Cause it's Friday and I can. But now I'm curious: Who would make your Top 5/10 West Wing Recurring Characters list?

* I miss PSP9. I'm sure Photoshop is great, but I don't know how to use it yet. Frustrating.
**Watching all this NCIS lately makes me want to watch the end of season 3 like rightnow.

Two memes tonight!

The rules are that for 8 days you have to post something that made you happy that day.
Day One: I slept in until 11:30 this morning! "Merlin" got renewed for a second season! And this video because I love Barney's Christmas songs.

And because [info]txvoodoo reminded me: Quote Leo McGarry Day! [Oh John. ♥]

Things I Love Today:
01. We're going to see Relient K in Columbus tonight. AAAHHHHH!
02. The West Wing marathons on Bravo: Hi, Senator. Why don't you take your legislative agenda and shove it up your ass?
03. The Middleman. I watched "Clotharian Contamination Protocol" over breakfast. *sigh*

01. Lego!Watchmen - how awesome is that? If they made real Lego Watchmen, I would buy them all in a heartbeat.

02. LMAO, my new favorite website: HasTheLargeHadronColliderDestroyedTheWorldYet.com. Too funny.

03. An impressively comprehensive J/D picspam that makes me want to do nothing but watch West Wing for several days.

04. Non-spoilery Pushing Daisies promo pic that leads me to wonder: why do y'all always stand so close?! You make me irrationally nervous. Geeminee.

05. Boooooooooooooooooooooones. I hope it's better than last week.

Heh, Vitina finished The West Wing. Or what I've got/what I think's worth watching anyway. I hadn't warned her that season four doesn't tie up neatly. Whoops! But really, the most important part of all this is that I got to re-watch 4x19 "Evidence of Things Not Seen." AKA This Might Be My Favorite Episode Ever, I Can't Decide. Anyway, with [info]colorstoobright's encouragement, I did another picspam like the one I did for "Posse Comitatus." Caps from [info]_jems_.

That's twice in four years; some of you guys must really be mad at me. )

Dule Hill is so incredibly pretty in that scene with Zoey. And I love this cap a whole freakin' lot; I think it has to do with the lighting.

I watched 3x22 "Posse Comitatus" with Vitina over dinner. She called it 'anti-climactic'; I really have no idea what she meant by that. I find that episode especially pretty - prettier than most, really - so I did a small picspam. Caps from ScreenMusings. Spoilers for the episode.

In the future, if you're wondering, 'Crime, boy, I don't know' is when I decided to kick your ass. )

Heh, I remember when I used the title of this episode as a Latin Moment in Br. Joe's class freshman year.

it's really icy out there

Um, guys?

SNOW DAY!!!!

I watched "Two Cathedrals" with Vitina over breakfast (and got to tell the story of me being there), then I had work for an hour and a half (which kinda sucked but whatever), and in an hour or so Casey and I are going to watch a movie. We just haven't decided which one yet.

I love surprise three day weekends.

i haven't got the words for you

01. We watched "Stardust"... well I was going to say last night but we didn't start it (idiots that we are) until midnight so we were up super late but the point is I loved it! It was clever and cute and funny and really quite the thing to watch right after I'd finished John Connolly's The Book of Lost Things. Charlie Cox is adorable. I'm thinking of picking up the book next time I hit up a bookstore (which I hope is soon because, damn, I'm going through withdrawal).

02. 50 Reasons To Watch The West Wing, though it's really more of [info]cnnjunky's favorite moments. Either way, it's a fun pic/quotespam.

03. Scans from the Pushing Daisies article in Emmy Magazine: Passing by the trailer and safely out of character, Pace sweeps Friel into his arms and waltzes her around the tarmac. "I know what we'll do if there's a strike," he exclaims. "We'll go on Dancing with the Stars!"

04. What shows will and won't be coming back after the strike ends (April/May or next fall).

05. I don't want to take my American Lit test tomorrow. Don't make me.

02. In today's version of Hey! So-and-so was on West Wing!: Eric Balfour was one of the dumb frat guys from "Mr. Willis of Ohio." (Also, just a reminder, I love Danny.)

03. James Roday and Dule Hill's Top 5 pop-culture mysteries. Love it, love them. I'm particularly fond of Dule's #5.

04. I really don't want to do my reading for Report & Proposal Writing. We had a quiz on Tuesday and we have another one tomorrow. Grr. At least I have Vamps in Film to look forward to.

05. I really should get a Psych icon. And a Lost icon. Dagnabbit.

Hehehe, today's Facebook event? Big Block of Cheese Day! Or, if you rather, Throw Open Our Office Doors To People Who Want To Discuss Things That We Could Care Less About..... Day. (Geez, can you believe John Spencer died two years ago?)

Andrew Jackson, in the main foyer of his White House, had a big block of cheese... The block of cheese was huge--over two tons. And it was there for any and all who might be hungry... Jackson wanted the White House to belong to the people, so from time to time, he opened his doors to those who wished an audience. It is in the spirit of Andrew Jackson that I, from time to time, ask senior staff to have face-to-face meetings with those people representing organizations who have a difficult time getting our attention. I know the more jaded among you see this as something rather beneath you. But I assure you that listening to the voices of passionate Americans is beneath no one, and surely not the peoples' servants.

[OMG where is all this snow coming from? It's ridiculous.]

i should go take my retainers out

01. My booklight broke. I just replaced the batteries so I know it's not that. I'm having to old-school-it with my mini flashlight. Alas, poor broken booklight.

02. Kerry, Kevin, and I (and possibly some more of our friends) are surprising Vitina by taking her up to Cleveland to see Dane Cook for her birthday. I think we're going 10 November. Woot! We're in nosebleed seats but the venue isn't ungodly huge so it should be fine. (Plus, y'know, stingy college students: nosebleed seats ftw!!) I am anticipating a rockin' good time.

03. I got an email the other day from the head of the English department reminding me that registration is approaching. Yes, it's that time of the year again, folks. Anytime anyone says anything about regestration I'm reminded of Toby Ziegler:

Sam: So, how do you feet there, big guy?
Toby: Like I just got screwed with my pants on.

04. I'm so incredibly loving my Crime Fiction class. It's easy, it's fun, the professor is nice, and either I'm amazing or my professor is the easiest grader in the world because I just got my midterm exam and my second paper back and I got 100% on both. I'm fairly sure I have 100% in the class. See? Fun.

05. I'm making dinner tonight. I'm rather nervous. I... don't cook. It's probably not a good idea. I felt badly that all of my roommates had made dinner for the house except me, and they said it was fine because I usually help, but still. Mom says the recipe I picked is pretty foolproof so please please please let me not screw it up. I'm making my great-grandmother's baked spaghetti and cheese.
